Natural Dye Workshop

I was asked to provide a natural dye workshop for Tamworth Gospel Choir as part of their Joy, Hope & Harmony project.
The workshop ran over three weeks where we had a two hour session at each event.
Part of the process had to be performed prior to the event; I scoured and mordanted some second hand 100% cotton sheets as this is both time consuming and quite mundane. I then cut the fabric into long scarves ready for use.
At the first session I explained the scouring and mordanting process, showing examples of previously dyed fabrics. We then discussed the natural dye choices which were madder and logwood, with an opportunity to see the raw product.
While we spoke, I was pre-heating a large dye pot of madder. When it reached the required temperature, approximately 80deg, each participant put their mordanted scarf into the dye bath. Prior to this, each scarf was marked with fabric pen to ensure they all went back to the correct people.
The dye was then simmered for just under an hour before we removed the fabric and rinsed. I took the scarves home to line dry ready for the next workshop.
The second week involved tye dyeing the scarves with logwood. Those taking part used varying methods to wrap, fold and tie their scarves before immersing them in the heated dye bath of logwood. We cooked this for slightly less time, about 30-40mins before removing, rinsing and unwrapping.
The unffolding of the designs is always a joy but I did have to whisk the scarves away again to dry, press and hem.
The third week was the big reveal where the completed scarves were handed out. I also prepared a quiz to see how much information had been retained, it was great to hear how many wanted to try this at home themselves!
The culmination of the workshops was a celebration where the choir sang alongside other musicians and performers. All of the workshop hosts were there together with participants and displays of the art and produce. It really was an evening of Joy, Hope & Harmony!
